Match Report from Selby website...
scunny 6ths 12 v Selby 5ths 18
The fifth team’s run of success against scunny continues with the latest victory meaning that the last 6 encounters between the two sides, stretching back over a season and a half, have all ended in Selby victories. The game followed a familiar pattern of late, with Selby starting strongly, allowing the opposition to hit back and then producing some great rugby to show their true mettle.
Having received the kick off Selby ran hard and supported well to force their way into the scunny 22. However when scunny got their hands on the ball and cleared to Selby’s half, defensive frailties and a clever midfield switch saw the home centre run in under the posts giving the full back an easy conversion for a 7 nil lead. Shortly afterwards the home team stretched their advantage to 12 points when the scrum half was allowed to force his way over from about 15 metres out despite the efforts of numerous Selby defenders. At this point skipper Boo decided a motivational speech was needed and the result was both positive and swift. From the kick off play was forced into the scunny 22 and when pressure was at last put on the scrum a wayward pass to the fly half was fumbled and Boo was quickest to react, controlling and picking up the ball to feed Adam Brown who battered his way over the line. Young Chris Young made the conversion look easy and Selby were back in the game at 12-7. With no further scores before half time Selby turned around eager to get back on terms and with 3 new players were confident of making an impact.
Although scunny were edging the battle for possession, Boo’s astute kicking kept them at a safe distance from the Selby line and as the game went on the Selby forwards began to win more of the ball. From a poor clearance by one of the scunny forwards Boo was able to put young Chris Young into space and the winger did brilliantly to evade a number of defenders and score by the corner flag. Dan England’s attempted conversion narrowly missed but Selby were back on level terms. The rest of the game was a terrific contest between two evenly matched teams but it was Selby who went on to claim the victory through a couple of sweetly struck penalties by young Chris Young awarded firstly for offside at the ruck and then for holding on in the tackle. Selby had further opportunities to score but a forward pass and a marginal offside both prevented Dan England from scoring. Nevertheless Selby managed to keep scunny at bay and record a very popular and well deserved victory. Congratulations to all who made it one of the stand out performances of the season so far!
